Dear Brewster members -

After much discussion, the Board of the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society has concluded that we must cancel the 2021 BKS Expo that was scheduled in Raleigh, NC. There are three main factors leading to this decision.

First, the host hotel is currently under COVID-19-related restrictions that would limit the number of people who could attend events at the Expo. That could change before May but would allow little time for you, our members, to make your plans. Second, and also very important, it is very doubtful that our international members could reasonably attend due to quarantining requirements. Lastly, our recent survey indicated the reluctance of a significant majority of members to commit to attending this Expo under the current conditions. Having a smaller than usual Expo for those who do wish to attend is not economically viable. We also have decided against the option of attempting to move the Expo to the fall.

We want to thank everyone who completed the recent survey on Expo attendance. While the number who indicated that they were “definitely” or “possibly” planning to attend were not large by our normal standards, they were larger than the hotel is permitted to accommodate at present. Therefore, the good news is that the hotel will not charge us for cancelling 2021 and will be offering us the same prices in 2023.

We are looking forward to the next Expo in St. Louis, MO, in May 2022 and then in Raleigh, NC, in 2023.

Attention BKS Kaleidoscope Artists: This request from Lisa Hill at info@capekaleidoscopes.com.

Hello Brewster Kaleidoscope Society Artists:

I was contacted recently by an organization in Louisville, KY looking for a kaleidoscope artist to work with them to design and build a large scale kaleidoscope installation for a new botanical garden they are going to build. This organization is a day care that serves adults with cognitive, developmental and physical disabilities so the kaleidoscope installation will need to be designed in a way their clients can enjoy and access. They do not have a specific budget but have +/- $10,000 in mind for this part of the project.

The project committee meets again in early January. They are looking to speak with interested artists NOW so they have time to pull together preliminary plans.

Please reply (to Lisa at info@capekaleidoscopes.com) if you are interested in being connected with this organization
