This class turns up the heat from “Smooth” to “Hot” to “Fusion”. You will create a two-mirror kaleidoscope in a pre-fused glass body with dazzling dichroic accents, an integral walnut stand and interchangeable cells. You will assemble a precision mirror system, attach a magnifying lens, enclose the mirror system in the scope body, and create two cells: one filled with fused and lampworked glass “magic” of your choice, and one using polarized film to produce bright, neon-like colors.

Totem
Approximately 6 hours. 3 hours am, 3 hrs pm, 1 hour for lunch. Imagine a column of kaleidoscopic magic extending linearly into a burst of dichroic fireworks. That is Totem! You will create your own Totem kaleidoscope, building a mirror system consisting of 7 components. You will also learn about focal lengths, ratios and kaleidoscopic engineering as we complete a splendorous column of color, charged by a liquid filled cell of your own creation. This project will introduce you to the architecture that creates the magic in a mandala. Students will have the opportunity to paint their own scope bodies using alcohol inks or select from pre-painted sheets. Prepare to have fun, be creative and learn new skills!

Pulsar
If a star was a sphere of kaleidoscopic energy, filled with happiness, color, and love to the point of bursting it could be mistaken for the image you will create in Pulsar. This 4-mirror combo of tapered and rectangular reflectors culminates in a cascading crescendo of color erupting from both sides of the sphere. Students will assemble all components and will build their own liquid filled cell using a myriad of torch-worked dichroic and colorful glass pieces. Students are welcome to bring their own objects for the cell as well.

Carousel Mandala
The Carousel Mandala is a new design featuring a ring of curved kaleidoscopic fractals. Imagine a chorus-line image wrapped into a cylinder. To add a little excitement, and make your scope truly unique, students will paint their own mirror components using alcohol inks to create an immersive psychedelic halo capping your Carousel image in a translucent corona of color. As the Carousel scope is rotated, the glass you painted becomes an integral part of the whole experience. We will produce a liquid filled glass cell with a combo of supplied glass pieces, as well as your own if you’d like.
