The Brewster Kaleidoscope Society board has begun an active initiative to promote kaleidoscopes to the general public. In our October 2017 newsletter, we reached out to members who would like to be involved in the planning and implementation of educational and outreach programs.
Why donate to the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society?
As an organization BKS provides a forum for artists, collectors, and retailers to promote and perpetuate kaleidoscopes as a unique art form. A kaleidoscope is actually two pieces of art in one; a piece that can be displayed on a table or shelf; but then, when looked through, the viewer opens a whole world of color and movement. That world can bring smiles, “wows”, or even allow the viewer a brief reprieve from the cares, stresses, or pains of the day
When you donate to the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society you may help with:
- providing scholarships or grants to art students interested in kaleidoscopes
- organizing donations of kaleidoscopes to children’s hospitals, assisted living facilities, etc.
- creating and presenting information on kaleidoscopes to schools and facilities for the elderly
- working with local art schools and organizations to organize kaleidoscope-oriented art competitions with awards donated by BKS
- inviting (or sponsoring) art students to attend and participate in a BKS expo
- preparing and presenting programs on new developments in the world of kaleidoscopes
(e.g. innovations in imagery, electronics in kaleidoscopes, kaleidoscopes and sound, …)
Some ideas we have talked about include:
- Organizing donation of scopes to children’s medical hospitals, assisted living facilities, etc.
- Creating and presenting information on kaleidoscopes to schools and facilities for the elderly
- Working with local art schools and art organizations to organize kaleidoscope-oriented art competitions with awards donated by BKS
- Invite (or sponsor) art students to attend and participate in a BKS convention
- prepare and present programs on new developments in the world of kaleidoscopes (e.g. innovations in imagery, electronics in kaleidoscopes, kaleidoscopes and sound, …)
As a nonprofit, BKS will be able to fund this initiative by receiving funds from members to underwrite some of the costs of programs. Th is could include supporting some of the material costs for kaleidoscope building, providing incentives to encourage young art students to create prize winning scopes, offering conference discounts to art students within the region of a convention and distributing teaching materials to schools promoting STEM.
As specific plans are developed, we will issue specific requests for involvement. Many of you who are already involved in education or outreach will be invited to submit concrete proposals for assistance to cover basic costs.
