Milton D. Cox, PhD, Mathematics, founded the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at Miami University where he initiated and directed the annual Original Lilly Conference on College Teaching, now in its 44th year. In 1990 he founded the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching (JECT), serving as Editor-in-Chief for 35 years. Milt has been project director and systems convener of federal grants establishing faculty learning community (FLC) programs and has visited over 100 institutions in the U.S. and abroad presenting on issues in higher education. In 2023 these included Mainland China and Portugal with virtual conference presentations in Lebanon and Cyprus. In addition to many publications, Milton is currently contributing forewords to three new edited books about FLCs, and he is Guest Co-Editor of JECT’s special issue involving social learning spaces—Etienne and Beverly Wenger-Trayner’s work on systems convening, value creation frameworks, and communities of practice. Milt teaches in Miami University's Institute of Learning in Retirement and is currently offering his course for the fourth time, "Experiencing the Craftsman Architecture of the Brothers Greene'" about the ultimate bungalows of Charles and Henry Greene in Pasadena, California, during 1903-1910. He teaches in his home which is built in the Greene and Greene style. During class, the members often look through the kaleidoscopes in his collection.
I collect because Jan Boal invited me to initiate the chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national Mathematics honorary, at Georgia State University. He invited me to stay at his bed and breakfast, the Veranda, at Senoia, Georgia. That is where I discovered his kaleidoscope shop. He started me collecting and I bought most of my 1985-1995 era scopes there. He and Bobby were wonderful. Dinner and breakfast at the Veranda featured Bobby's delicious meals and Jan's evening kaleidoscope lecture each night. Magnificent! Now, why I collect. I am not an artist of artifacts or builder with my hands, so I appreciate the works of those who plan, design, and build the wonderful wood, glass, and inspirational models. I love the exteriors and interiors!
