Biography/Collector Statement

Hello, my name is Christal Parmain, I started my kaleidoscope collection in 2018 by buying my first kaleidoscope in a toy store. Since then I have been interested in its history and all the other objects related to it. I bought a lot of books about kaleidoscopes, glasswork... most of my collection are second-hand objects. I have a wide variety of "après la pluie " (after the rain) kaleidoscopes because Mr. Dominic Stora has his workshop in the region where I live and I have met him on many occasions. Also I have several Van Cort kaleidoscopes that are often found on the French second-hand market because some models were sold by "Nature et Découvertes" (the Nature Company).

Why I Collect

I collect kaleidoscopes because they're an object that intrigues me. At first i saw the kaleidoscope as a toy but after several searches, I was taken by a passion for this object that I see today as a true complex work of art. They come in many forms, and the patterns they present are fascinating.

“This handsome kaleidoscope has a noble heritage. From1885 through 1916, Peter Carl Fabergé crafted his legendary Imperial Easter eggs for Czar Alexander III of Russia and his son Nicolas II. The eggs opened to reveal breathtaking surprise, such as wildflower with petals of chalcedony (white opal) and leaves of gold. Now the brillant blossom of color inside our kaleidoscopic egg will truly take your breath away. Hand made and assembled in our workshops, it features lacquered brass, polished birch, a carefully- calibrated ocular lens, and precisely-angled mirrors. The tiny chamberbox containd a special recipe of hand-lampworked glass; as a result, each egg displays a unique image. Every turned-brass pedestral is individually fitted so your egg nests snugly, and the bottom is felted for presentation in your finest setting. The Van Cort signature on the eyepiece assures you of quality and authenticity.”
